Maintaining a variety of programs during a slow period for the U.S. mining industry has paid off with a nearly $1 million contract for the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology.

Mines has one of only a hful of programs in the nation that teaches conducts research in extractive metallurgy, or extracting metal from rocks, according to Mines President Heather Wilson.

That plus a renewed interest in domestic sources of these metals has helped a group of faculty students receive the contract award from the U.S. Department of Defense.

“So now we’re needed,” Jon Kellar, professor of Materials Metallurgical Engineering at Mines, said Monday. “We survived.”
